depends on that and really...RESOLUTION.
high resolution you are going to see major major difference in performance with SLI.
i am an SLI nut...but my monitor doesnt justify having two 8800gt's (got one comin wo0t). two 7900gs', yes. lol.
but, when the buying frenzy strikes again....i see a 24" WS in my future and another 8800gt. muah-ha-ah.

thats the 3rd time in like 2 months dude...

first making the original, 2nd to ur current one, and 3rd to put the 8800gt in SLi

If you are playing at 1600x1200 one 8800GT overclocked will keep many people plenty happy enough...at anything larger this is when SLI 8800GT's seem to truly shine.

Well i just pulled the trigger on 2 cards from Fry's at 229 per. Now to find an sli board and pick up a new psu ><

SLI is extremely overrated. I have it now, and it blows. Ive tried to see a difference between 1024x768 and 1680x1050 on a buddies WS 22". I didnt get much more performance outa the 2 cards. And i had all the help i could get to set these things up right. SLI is just to make your e-***** bigger.

those resolutions arent really considered high. 1680 x 1050 is really just barely approaching high resolution (IMO at least).
in those benchmarks from guru 3d it shows SLI 8800gt's to almost DOUBLE performance at 2560 x 1600 and like a 50% boost at 1920 x 1200, depending on the game of course.
sli DOES make a tremendous difference at high resolutions. at lower resolutions, no you really dont need it.
