I built my current desktop a while ago and am currently getting into programs like UnrealEd and 3Ds max. while my desktop runs these guys, it's having some trouble. So I'm thinking about an early Christmas present to myself

you know the drill, rip it apart and tell me whats wrong with my build. I haven't done a whole lot of research on the individual parts but def. plan too. I am also a bit out of the loop as far as company reputations and product quality. so if you see any red flags, or even some yellow ones let me know.

Looks nice, but needs more tweaking.

CPU:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
This will definitely benefit you over that E6850, especially with all those heavy editing programs you're about to use. And because it's in the same price range as that dual core E6850, why not go quad core with more L2 cache?

Motherboard:
Abit IP35 Pro
Why do you need a near $300 motherboard? It's just not necessary, when there are much lower priced ones, that will do the same thing. The only thing that the DFI LP UT P35 has over the IP35 Pro, is one more PCIe slot, and two more USB slots...that's about it. And it cost $100 more than the IP35 Pro.

Power supply:
Corsair 550VX
That HIPER 580W is a great choice. Has enough amps, to power that rig. But the Corsair 550VX that I linked for you, is a better buy for the money. Don't let the lower wattage fool you. The power of the PSU is not in the wattage, but in it's +12V rails. And the Corsair 550VX has one powerful single rail of 41A, compared to the HIPER's 38A on two rails.

RAM looks good.

Great graphic card.

Excellent monitor brand.

Nice DVD Burner.

Case was your choice.

Is that type of gaming GPU really needed for UnrealEd and 3Ds max. I thought the big thing for those programs was rendering, which was CPU dependent.

Are both of those openGL based graphics?

An nvidia Quaddro might be better suited for the best possible openGL rendering.

On the Quadro, with standard OpenGL hardware rendering (single light, single-sided lighting, anti-aliasing on/off, one one texture, etc.) I get a nice 60 FPS (with Vsync on). With the 8800GTX, I get only 15 FPS. Apples to Apples.

If you're not using large assemblies then you will do fine with the 8800GTX.

Definitely go with nvidia, in every benchmark to comparable ATI cards it wins the openGL performance crown.

the graphics card is one thing i was needing to do more research on. I'm a game design student and am just getting into the heavy application work, so that was one of the main things on my mind. i can navigate around in the programs pretty well with my current rig, but later on with the torque game engine and probably unreal 2007 (or 3 whatever they decide to call it) i might be needing a card that is suited better for rendering and whatnot. At the same time...i like games too so it's something i need to do more research on. thanks for the ideas, and i will def read that forum thread to see what they have to say. thanks guys, keep it commin.

Yes in gaming situations. But I thinght that the new fire GLs based on the R600 core were very powerful at open GL?

I meant to specify as far as the gaming cards go that every nvidia card I've seen benchmarks better than the Ati equivalent at open gl applications.

I dotn know about the direct comparsion between the fire GL and the quaddro's and open gl performance.

so i looked around and did some research on different factors that went into a workstation build. This is what I've come up with after my research, price tag is a bit hefty, but i see this build lasting me a while. The problem im having now with my desktop is the in ability to work with anything really highpoly as far as 3dmax goes.

one question i do have is, as far as running the 1 raptor and 3 regular7200 rpm drives, is whether or not its really going to effect my system. I plan to use the raptor for operating system and applications, and the other 3 for data storage. heavy photoshop/3dsmax/zbrush/unreal use has filled up my current computer quite a bit. as always i like to hear peoples input as far as the build goes, and any other ideas or approaches i could take to making a rig that can do what i want it to do. thanks.
