Audio editing software

Anyone know of any good preferably free, but will pay if i have to, audio editing software? All i really need it for is to extract/shorten/lengthen parts of songs and maybe add some basic effects to it! thanks guys1

I heard Audacity is a good one. Although I'm not sure if it's free.

Audacity is brilliant, use it for everything audio related... that iTunes can't do.

It's very free, its simple to use, like a text editor, but for music. It has some wonderful effects, plus one click fade in/out.

and this is Audition: Adobe - Audition 3

They are different.

That just sucks. I got the CS3 Master yet it doesnt have all the apps. I hate it when Adobe does that.

with audition you can turn 2.o music into true dts or DD 5.1.
