Sound Cards

The main benefit is higher quality sound. But really, onboard sound is decent for the average user. If you're not picky about sound, a sound card isn't necessary. Then again, a good sound card isn't really expensive. Like:
Newegg.com - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card - Retail
Newegg.com - Creative X-Fi 30SB073000000 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Blaster - OEM

You should also have a good speaker system, to compliment the sound card.

get a nice X-Fi card, crystallizer and CMSS-3D pwnzors my world, eax also is nice for games, movies and music that support it.

crystallizer enhances crappy music/sound so that if its encoded at a lower bitrate (lower quality) then it'll puff it up to a higher bitrate (simulated higher quality)

cmss-3d will simulate up to 9 speakers/sound sources in a normal 2 speaker/2 earbud system

the sound is noticeable imo
