Challenge: What is the significance of 2Rx8 and 1Rx8 on memory/module??

Do you know what 2Rx8 or 1Rx8 stands for?

I have 2 matchin pairs of samsung memory in my PC.

One pair states on the label:

1GB 2Rx8 PC2 5300U - 555 - 12 - E3

The other pair states on the label:

512MB 1Rx8 PC2 5300U - 555 - 12 - ZZ

They seem identical except for the 2Rx8/1Rx8 part and the size.

2Rx8 and subsequently 1R means RANKS so this means, 2 Ranks for x8 SD RAMs

I too thave the same memoy on my computer, and I have been wondering, if there is anyone over there who knows what does the u mean(5300U)?
And E3 (12-E3)???
What memory can I replace this memory with? And Can I mix the type of present memory with another type of memory if suported?
IS this type of memory DDR2 as well: ( 2Rx8 PC2- 5300U-555-12-E3)??
