Huge laptop problem

I have a toshiba laptop and was having a hard time booting up
i just could not get in....so i ran my recovery cd to start over
and even that doesnt work.....so im thinking its the HDD

now my question is can i go buy another HDD and start over and if so
i had windows xp on it if i buy a new HDD how do i re-install XP
can someone help me out

You can use the disks that came with your laptop to put all the programs that came with it back on.

The problem is when i put that cd in and try to enter in revovery mode
its doesnt launch...gives me errors..it wont evern run that cd??
so whats the next step....take the HDD out and pitch it?

For my toshiba laptop do i need to buy the exact HDD or can i buy
any kind?\

what are the step to re-intall xp on a new HDD

Call them and tell them it doesn't work anymore and describe the problem. More than likely they will send you a new one and you send the busted one back. It's at least worth a try, since you'd be getting it for free. Dell did that for me like 3 times when I had problems with my old laptop's HDD.
