We have a VERY strange problem here at work that we can't figure out and we can't find any information on so I thought I would ask here.

Every once and a while we will get a machine that just 'goes weird' on logins.
A user will log in with their id and there is nothing on their desktop that was there before. A little bit of digging and we find out that their id name has changed on the machine.

For example.
Let's say the regular id is: user01
They work on this for a while...even YEARS..and one time when they log in it becomes: user01.domain

The user id number with our domain following it.

It seems to be totally random.

If you delete the user01.domain profile the next time they log in it comes up with: user01.domain.001 and then .002...

So if you look under the profiles this is what you seen:
user01
user01.domain
user01.domain.001
user01.domain.002

I've never seen this before and am speechless as to what could be causing it.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

This sounds like a SID problem between the server and this PC. I would first view the event logs and see if there is anything there. You may also want to remove the computer from the domain and then rejoin this will create a new SID between the PC and the domain controller. FYI... This will create a new user profile so you may see user01.domain.003. Hope this helps - chances are you will see something in the event log - which may help resolve the problem.
