I want to build myself a new rig and have about 400 to spend on it. I only need the components, so no case/monitor/keyboard, or any of that crap. I can't go much over $400, so I want the best bang for the buck (of course). I think AMD offers the bang/buck for under $400 rigs, so i was thinking something like

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+(65W) Windsor 2.2GHz Socket AM2 Processor
Model ADO4200CUBOX - Retail

$74.99

A-DATA Value Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model VDQVE1A16K - Retail

$64.99

EXCELSTOR Jupiter Series ESJ8080S 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

$36.99

Subtotal: $176.97 (so far)

I need help with the Motherboard ( i don't know what chipsets and crap to get) and I want one that doesn't bottleneck anything and it's reliable. Keep that under 70 bucks... the cheaper the better.
Now the fun part... I need the best video card for around $100. I was looking at the 8500GT and X1600Pro, but I don't know how good those are or if there are other ones with the better bang/buck ratio.

I also want to know if it's better to get 4x512MB ram or 2x1GB. For dual channel, that is.

I would go with ati for a 100 buck graphx card or under, as for ram, you either get the best or the cheapest cause anything between is a waste of money, I would do 2x1gb rather than 4 512mb's. As for the motherboard i would go with a reliable one rather than performance. A cheap ECS brand is good enough and cheap enough, they lack extras but they are stable.

i'd go with Cruscial Balistix Ram 2gb (2x1gb) sticks for your ram way more OC able than A-Data's ..... if you dont really like the price on the Crucials then just wait a little nad the rebate will come back around dropin em down to about 69-75 bucks

Hey b1, isnt an 80 gig to small of a hdd? especially if he gets vista.
If he doesnt get vista then their is no use for dx 10 card.

And pc boy, do you need a psu?

i got my 7900gs for $100 after $50 MIR .
I bought it about 2 months ago and just got the rebate like 2 weeks ago so not bad at all!!!

And i sold the card for $110 on ebay since i decided to upgrade again.

Not bad eh!

how's the 8600GT compared to the 7600GT? I'm back from the 6800GT days and don't know much about these new cards.
