The 7900GS is a more powerful card, than the 8600GT. If you're thinking the 8600GT is better because it is DX10 compatible, it's not, because it's not really worth playing DX10 games with a weak DX10 card.

the 7900GS it will be then!! cheers for the advice!, il order it now and let you know how i get on!

whats the difference with the GT and GS after the numbers? have been offerd a nVidia GeForce 8400GS for about 45 quid! any good?
when does the 8700Gt come out?

The GT is usually an overclocked GS, with a little more specs added. If you're planning on gaming, the 8400GS isn't any good.

aha im getting it slowly now! so with a gig of ram to start with, an intel dore2 duo what sort of cards should i be looking at? what would be your recomendation for say a high end, medium, and low end?

High end are the 8800 series (DX 10)
Med( 7600,8600,7900gs)

The 7900gs,gt,etx are pretty good but they do not support dx10.

If your planning on wanting to play games with dx 10, you should go for the 8800 series. If you have a budget, wait for the 8700 series to come out. Im guessing they will be equivalent to the 7900 series.

I dont know any comparison with ati cards.

I've owned a 7600gt and 7900 gs, and currently with the 8800gts.

cheers fella! seems an 8800 is the way forward! leas ti wont have to change it for a couple of years! looking on varius sits and on DABS.Com, after typing in 8800 GTX this came up
Sapphire Technology Radeon X1950 PRO 512MB GDDR3 PCIE Dual DVI 580/700, is this the same product?

No it's not, because the X1950PRO is an ATI card, while the 8800GTX is an Nvidia card.
