windows xp boot up

When my windows xp boots up the desktop appears with just the mouse and no icons. After about five minutes the icons appear and will finish boot up. Thanks for any help .

how about some computer specs? when was the last time you ran anti-virus/spyware scans? When did the slow boot start or had it been happening as ong as you have owned the computer?
