hotswap

i know its not a good idea, but why is hotswapping hd's dangerous? hotswapping is where you plug in a hd, cd drive, anything without turning the computer off first. is the risk becuase the power is already flowing that it could spark? also is there any way to get past this aside from buying a portable hd case?

I don't think it is a bad idea if you shut to computer down before doing it. I know the guy that does pc troubleshooting locally always does for his hotswap drives.

They are only valuable for the "swapping" feature then though.

hrmm i'm pretty sure hot swapping wasnt set out for an average user.. but more of a huge server kinda thing... you wouldnt wanna shut down a server hosting a bunch of crap now would you?

well i have to put in and take out cd drives in my computer maybe 20 times a day, and shutting down a server isnt the nicest of things to do, so hotswapping would sure be a help, cutting off atleast an hour a day of hastle.
