There is an entire forum for overclocking questions where you might get a better response: http://www.techist.com/forums/f10/

I just finished my first overclock so I'm probably not the best guy to answer your questions but if you read through this thread of questions I asked my first time through it might help you answer some of the basic questions:

Also, would help if you put your system specs in your signature so pple can see what you are working with.

the specs of my pc are:

amd athlon 64x2 3800+ with stock heatsink
GIGABYTE - GA M55S-S3 AM2 ATX MOTHERBOARD
PNY DDR2 DIMM MEMORY 1GB PC2-6400
600W ARCTIC ATX POWER SUPPLY UNIT
NVIDIA GEFORCE 8500 GT
HITACHI 250GB SATA II INTERNAL HARD DRIVE

Hey hujack.

I highly recommend that you talk with nagasama about overclocking. Especially since you have an AMD processor. He's an expert at AMD overclocking.

Since you have a stock heatsink, you won't go very far. I'd suggest you get an aftermarket heatsink, such as the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. It's only $20 at newegg.com.

Overclocking does reduce the CPU lifespan, but it's so little, it's nothing to be concerned about. The average lifespan of a CPU is about 10 years. Overclocking will take off 1-2 years, depending on how much you overclock. And I assume, you won't be using that CPU, for 8-9 years.
