1: The next generation card is usually stronger then two of the previous generation cards ( look at benchmarks comparing SLI 7900s to 1 8800 GTX )

2. The amount of heat generated by the 2 cards is dentrimental to their health as well as their overclocking potential

3. Less then 50% performance gain

4. Newer generation cards usually have far better effiency and architecture

5. Save money on non-SLI mobos

6. The new 8 series cards are too huge and current mobos seem inable to properly SLI them ( theres so little clearance between them! )

7. SLI uses more power costing you more money

Same could be said for a ferarri. As long as there are people with more money than brains, someone will be willing to take it off of their hands.

Yep. Nvidia and ATI made SLI/Crossfire to make money. It does allow you to get the best performance but overall its a cash cow for the companies.
Just like when the Ultra came out and costed way more than it was worth. Nvidia knew this but they knew they could make a ton of money per card and they could just make a small number for enthusist and people with to much money.

well its not NEVER worth it.. if ur using like a 1920 resolution monitor.. then SLi can be necessary, also if u get a good deal on a second card.. might jump ur benchmark scores and some game performance

SLI works if you need the BEST performance, ie, 2x 8800GTX's.

The rest of SLI is a marketing gimmick to sell of older stock, making them still "valuable" in some respects.

QFT except its 2 8800s ultras for best performance

If you have a large monitor with high resolution you may need SLI to optimize your performance. You have to be a rich tech geek to do that though.

In my opinion, it's only worth to SLI if:

-You're gaming on a 30" LCD at a resolution of 2560 x 1600.

-You get a really good deal on the second card, like vernong mentioned earlier.

-You use cash as toilet paper.

Of course SLI isn't worth it for the general PC gamer, when your on a budget there are just too many negatives for it.

But if you are a major overclocker and computers are your only loved hobby... then dropping 5 or 6 grand on a pc is just the norm.
