yeah....
i'm talking about the time to wipe out a haed drive [no reformat..reformat comes after]..
..this failing unit i have takes 3 hours and a half for 1 sibgle pass using killdisk or wipedrive....

-in other forums..i read that a 320 gig -1 single pass- takes 1 hour..

-my question is -- why the difference...
-is it because my hd started to fail ?

You're trying to wipe out unused programs in your current HDD correct? Your HDD takes about 3-1/2 hours just for 1 single pass of KillDisk or WipeDrive. Other people with a 320GB HDD, takes only about an hour to finish either 1 of those 2 programs. The problem could be that your HDD's life span is about to end. Do you get any BSODs?

BSODs= guesss this is bad sectors.. right
-and also...i wipe out the whole hard drive, and this is what it takes [1 single pass=80gigs]
not...after both programs finish..no bad sectors...
-if i run the seagate sacn utility..i get 'file system" fail.. the rest is green...

I think formatting also depends on the reading speed of the Optical Drive. When I first built my computer and hooked up my Sony Optical Drive, took about 2 hours to reformat and about another hour just to do the setup. But with this Emprex Optical Drive a buddy gave me, took less then an hour to do the setup and a full reformat.

ok my cd reading speed is 20x....it's only a reader....
my dvd burner can read a cd at 48x..
..this is what you mean right...
--what reading speed[cd] you have on your Emprex Optical Drive

wait... 16x is for dvd.... i mean cd-reading speed
because....these programs come on cd format..
