The Best Sound Card

I've noticed that sound cards are hardly ever given much importance, but IMO, a good sound card along with a decent speaker set matters almost as much as a powerful gfx card when it comes to having the ultimate 'gaming experience'.

I'm sure you will agree to some extent, so here I am asking your opinions on what the best sound card is in the market at the moment. I've had my eyes on the Sound Blaster cards, but does anyone have a different opinion? I'll be getting one soon, and I'd appreciate some expertise feedback! Thanks!

Oh, and one more thing. The latest SB cards require PCI 2.1 slot, but I'm not sure if my PCI slots are 2.1. My mobo specs don't say so either. Is PCI 2.1 standard in mobo's?
