The disk being read probably doesn't generate a lot of heat but making a image or using a no-cd has benefits.

1. ease
2. noise
3. keeping the disc good
4. keeping the drive good
5. works better for some programs

No using the cd will not reduce performance in gameplay etc, and it will not generate heat worth worrying about.
By all means buy another cooler for your graphics though, i dout you can get one for a 7series card that would also fit a 8 series card though

there arnt very many VGA coolers out for the 8800's and thats supposed to be one of the best

They will prob take up about 4 slots, and weigh at least 20 pounds (but hopefully they get smaller not larger than the moster 8800)
