When installing HDs I was wondering how vulnerable they were to static electricity if installing them by holding onto the sides. Are the sides of a HD metal or plastic? Could electricity really pass through the sides and damage the HDs themselves?

Also if they can be damaged by static electricity any warning signs we can look for when running them?

When I handle HDs, I just hold by the sides, no problem. Theres nothing to worry about, as long as you don't rub your feet on carpet or something, and touch the hard drive's board underneath.

okay, well I had socks on and was on carpet ( double negative ), but at least the sides are protected right?
