How do you know if your HD is failing or not i saw the .S.M.A.R.T. results but i don't know what the worst and those values mean. So can someone could tell me what each of those value mean? Also how do people get their hard drives to fail? overheating? overusing? ???

It could fail due to being hot all the time. Heat increases wear on parts, so if it's hot it will fail more quickly.

A HDD will eventually just fail though, there's nothing you can do to prevent it. There's a lot of complicated and precision moving parts inside it, one tiny little bit of play or incorrectness will make it fail. One little spec of dust inside will cause it to fail.

Whats actually considered hot for a harddrive?

My Maxtor runs at about 36-40oC

Those temperatures, are perfectly normal.

Actually I heard that the warmer the hard drive is, the longer the lifespan.

excellent! see my friends keep telling me having a HDD at 342 degrees is just unsafe, but i'll be the one laughing when i have all my data in 50 years time and they are stuck with nothin! har har har
