can anyone tell me please if changing a cpu to one with a higher L2 cache will lead to an increase in performance , or would cause compatability problems with m/board or other components , or no effect at all ? eg; upgrade from 1G/128/100 to a 1.3G/256/100 is what i propose .

Going from 128 to 256 won't really do much at all. Cache is not a performance boosting factor, significantly. It also doesn't have anything to do with compatibility. It's the CPU socket, FSB, and that the motherboard supports that type of CPU.
