RAM and HDD boot-up problems

After using my PC with no problems this morning, I shut down and went out for a while. When I got back and turned it on, everything came to life as normal except I wasn't getting any display and there was no beep.

I sighed the very recognisable "What now?" sigh and started removing bits of hardware to see if i could tell what was wrong. I took out the RAM and disconnected the Hard drives etc and that seemed to do the trick. Luckily I have two sticks of RAM and although the one has had it, at least I've got the other.

Unfortunately the OS HD I have seems to have also bitten the dust. It is my oldest piece of hardware but I was wondering if there was a connection between the RAM and HD breaking? I've tried to test the HD all the ways I can... I just don't want to buy a new one and and maybe damage that if it's likely to happen again.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
