Hard drives are genreally self explanitory, the only thing I had to check was the jumper settings and I found documentation online.
I bought a WD 40GB.
I had problems installing it because I have a pre-built computer from Dell and one of the IDE cable ends was put on backwards. So I flipped the cable, and the computer goes:
WTF YOU MOFO I CANT FIND ANY DRIVES!
So I go back into my case and do a backflip trying to install my hard drive and ended up having to put the primary hard drive under the slave hard drive and re-reversing the cable.
So beware when installing hard drives inside retail computers, sometimes I wonder if they do that on purpose to make you use their support, if it was, sure didn't work on me.
