cheerio old man, i wasnt carelessly throwing out statements when i made my comment, i just know what i am talking about. here ya go, the intel guys can probably change some of this stuff and keep the price the same. i use amd, so i kinda did this quick in response to your challenge:
total 1047.81, plus shipping. even includes the printer. and i used good parts all around, not a crappy one in there.
i win. ;)

p.s. if you were not going to overclock the best buy system, but overclock the system that i would build....then yes, you could do waaaaay better for under 1000.00. this rig is meant to perform on par with the best buy rig at stock speeds (which it will, if not even better). if you overclock it, you may need to add an aftermarket hsf, depending on your temps.

3 HD's??

Thank you so much for all your input. Nagasama - yes, I have to concede that you do win :) Believe me, I was rooting for you to win, though. I knew if I issued a challenge that people would come up with the goods, no one wants to lose :D I went to bestbuy this morning to find out additional information about that comp, and the idiots working there did not have a clue. I wanted to find out about the wattage and maker of the power supply, and the companies that make the ram, hard drive, motherboard, etc. They couldn't tell me anything about it, so I decided bestbuy can go to ****. It's amazing to me that they could be selling a computer and not be able to tell you any details about it....

I think I might even splurge and get the 8800gts 320... and to compensate I'm going to drop the windows vista for now - maybe when dx10 games come out I'll get it. But for now XP should suffice. And I'm going to leave out the printer because I don't really need it. The e6600 will be great - I definitely don't think I need the quad-core. Also I think I'm going to do a seagate hd instead of the western digital one. But anyway, here is what I'm thinking about now (it is basically nagasama's suggestions with a few changes):

intel core 2 duo e6600 - 222.90
nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel motherboard - 108.99
gskill 2gb ram - 104.99
Hanns widescreen 19" - 169.99
seagate barracuda hd 500gb sata - 119.99
coolmax power supply - 79.99
cooler master case - 44.99
lg dvd burner - 29.99
evga geforce 8800gts 320 - 314.99
artic silver compound - 5.99

The total comes to 1202.81. And if I'm feeling cheap at the last minute, I'll switch the 8800 back to the 8600... it is quite tempting to get the more expensive one, though...

Any additional comments? Am I forgetting anything? Also, do I need any additional cooling or should this be fine (assuming that I won't overclock)?

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to ask - would you guys recommend the widescreen monitor for gaming or do you think it is best to stick with a 4:3 for now? Now I'm getting really excited about this new comp :D - oh and I replaced the evga with an xfx, as reviews I've read seem to favor this card. So here it is again, with links:

The total comes to $1250.50, after shipping. If there's anything missing or that could be improved while keeping it in the same price range, let me know.

Definately stick with the widescreen aspect ratio. It is much better, and is widely supported in modern games. It also feels much more natural to view. I have also heard good things about the Samsung SpinPoint 500GB. It is apparently queter and quicker than the Seagate.

Yeah, one other person mentioned the Samsung. And it is $10 cheaper than the Seagate. I'll definitely consider it. Thanks for your opinion on the widescreen issue... do you know anything about that specific monitor that I listed above? And does the rest of the setup look ok to you?

WOO HOO we win another convert!
i like evga because of their warranty service, just a personal preferrence (lol like my amd). their customer service is good, but man their tech support is mucho terrible.
also, note the sli mobo and power supply. that way i figure if you want to do that with 8600gt's instead of 8800gts 320, the option is there. i dont know how 8600gt's stack up against 7900gs, but my sli gs's outscore 8800gts 320 all the time on benchmarks, and they do REALLY well in games...loads of eye candy. i think two 8600gts are cheaper than one 8800gts 320? and i am pretty sure that two of them will be cooler (like temperature) than an 8800gts. like i said, i am not too sure about the performance of the 8600gt, but one of the video card experts is sure to happen along shortly.
welcome to tech forums, and welcome to THE CLUB!
i have heard nothing but positive feedback from the hansg monitor. another brand i can vouch for is BenQ. i have their 19". i love it,but wish it was widescreen. and yes you can use widescreen while gaming. go ahead and get it, or you will likely be wishing (like me, lol) that you had.
