Good Deal?

I would wait till the 22nd, get a cheaper Quad, and a 8800GTS or 8600GTS instead of the GTX and use the money for a monitor and printer like the orginial system had.

Thanks for the replies. I assume the $1291 you are quoting would be after July 21st. I can't help but notice, however, that what you listed does not include the monitor, printer, hard drive, dvd burner, or copy of windows vista home premium. This adds at least another $500, making the price today $2063, and the price on the 22nd approx $300 lower I guess. Still above my price range. I switched out the gtx for a gts like meat_helmet recommended, and here is what I came up with:

video card geforce 8800gts - 389.99
processor q6600 - 226
crucial ram 2gb - 114.99
corsair power supply - 129.99
motherboard gigabyte - 129.99
cooler master case - 49.99
monitor - 200
hd western digital 500gb - 144.99
windows vista - 200
liteon dvd burner - 37.99
tuniq tower - 55

This comes to 1678.93, which is still a bit out of my price range, and this reflects the price change of the processor on the 22nd. And I decided to scratch the printer. Of course the video card is far better and I'm getting what I pay for.

Anyway, I've got to get to bed - thanks for all the input. I still think the computer I originally mentioned is not a bad deal for what it is, considering all that it includes - when adding up the cost of the parts RIGHT NOW (not july 22nd), it is definitely costs less than the sum of the parts. But I don't think we're gonna agree on that. Anyway, I'll probably wait until the 22nd and then decide what to do.

do you need quad core?

get g-skill ram.
I take it thats a gigabyte-ds3 board???
Don't buy the western digital either get a seagate for the 5 year warranty and its slightly faster then the WD or The samsung spinpoint which is the fastest 7200rpm drive you can buy.

Nah, I don't really need quad-core - I just was listing that to try and match up with the original bestbuy system I had posted. Is there another processor you would recommend instead? I've read the quad-core gets quite hot and also doesn't overclock too well - I've never overclocked before but I'm thinking if I do end up putting together a system like this it might be fun to try. I swapped out the parts that you recommended, and the total is 1668.93. I really need to get the price down, though. I tried swapping out the 8800gts for the original card that was in the bestbuy comp (8500gt - yes i know everyone here thinks it sucks, you don't need to tell me again), plus I subtracted the copy of windows vista, and I came up with 1179.93, basically the exact same price as the bestbuy comp. I do need the copy of windows, though. Any other recommendations on how I can get the price of this setup down to about $1200 without killing the quality? Also, vernong1992: is this the tuniq tower you were referring to and will it work with this system?: Sunbeam Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler for AMD AM2, K8 and Intel 478, LGA775

video card geforce 8800gts - 389.99
processor q6600 - 226
g-skill ram - 129.99
corsair power supply - 129.99
motherboard gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R - 129.99
cooler master case - 49.99
monitor - 200
seagate barracude 7200 500gb - $119.99
windows vista - 200
liteon dvd burner - 37.99
tuniq tower - 55

Total:
1668.93

Now since everyone here is so quick to bash the original system I posted, and carelessly throw out statements like "you could do waaaaaaaaaay better for under $1000", I'd like to issue a challenge. Anyone who can build me a system for $1179.97 or less that is better than the bestbuy system I quoted (and this must be by TODAY's prices, not the prices on july 22nd) wins. The system must include video card, processor, ram, power supply, motherboard, case, monitor, hard drive, copy of windows vista home premium, and a dual-layer dvd burner. You can even leave out the printer, and use whatever crappy parts you think will be in the gateway (350w power supply, crappy motherboard, etc.) Here again is the bestbuy system to beat:

Intel Q6600 Quad-core processor
19" HD LCD Widescreen Monitor (Gateway FPD1975W)
2048MB DDR2 memory
500GB hard drive
Dual-layer DVD/CD burner
Geforce 8500 GT graphics (DX 10 compatible)
Lexmark All-in-One printer X2500

The problem is these people are quoting your pricing on performance parts...whereas no pre-build PC in stores will come with that. Here's a list of "cheaper" parts, more like what you'll find in that machine:
