stream processors squeeze the most performance out of the card, never leaving any processors empty. For instance, if there was a section that was heavy on geometry, most of the processors would process geometry, and the others would focus on shading and whatnot. But, if there is a section in which shading was heavy, the stream processors could switch from geometry to shading, unlike pipelines, which are stuck at shading permanetly, which means they leave some pipelines blank sometimes. wow, that was a crappy explanation. just google: dx10 +pipelines.
