My computer freezes every time I use it. Everything will stop working as the whole computer becomes unresponsive. Occasionally this is accompanied by a high pitched loud ringing from the speakers.

When I restart, my computer loads up operating with a 800mhz processor, instead of the 2.0ghz it is.

Running service pack 2 windows xp. The problem has somehow gotten worse since i formatted my computer and re-installed windows.

Nothing seems to make the computer freeze. Seems quite random. My computer isn't really overworked.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Is this a legal copy of Windows? What other hardware do you have? Video card, sound card, RAM, etc.

Yes genuine copy.
Sound Blaster 4 sound card
Radeon 9600 pro graphics
1 gig of ram.
Windows is running off quite an old H/D. 25 gig.

you need to identify what motherboard your computer has. then go to the manufacturers website, and download the correct bios upgrade, if any. also take a look to see if they offer a program to help flash the bios.
