my question is simple - can you mix ram i.e generic and corsair, kingston gskill etc etc

Most manufacturers dont recommend but it that would be so you stick to their brand right ???
 
what do you mean sometimes ?? as in if the motherboard supports both types of ram...
 
probably not. it just wont work if it doesnt want to. the main thing (i would think) is to be sure they both work on the same voltage. so, in effect...if one stick wants 1.9V and another wants 2.2V so you turn it up in bios to 2.2V...well...i guess you could screw up one of the sticks.
it will most likely be fine.
 
i see i see, will give it a shot the reason i ask is cause corsair is only a couple of bucks extra so why not...
