Often my mind starts to think outside the box a little bit, and I wondered, as of today..what would be the ultimate gaming system specifications right now? ( minus any crazy IBM super computer stuff )

Maybe a ridiculous overclocked core 2 duo QX6800 with 4 gigs of ddr3 ram with 2 Sli GeForce 8800 Ultra 768MB and some ridiculous intricate watercooling + air cooling system?

Wow a whole 16 mb of ram? I only have 2 mb right now...8x that I just cannot fathom...

As of today, probably:

CPU - Overclocked QX6800
Motherboard - ASUS P5K3 Deluxe
RAM - 4GB of DDR3-1333
Graphics - Overclocked 8800 Ultras or GTXs in SLI
Power supply - PC P&C 750W
Hard drives - Two Raptor 150GB HDDs in RAID 0, and a Samsung Spinpoint 500GB or two, for backup and storage
Optical - DVD or BL DVD burner or both
Sound card - X-Fi Elite w/ Logitech Z5500 sound system
OS - Windows XP Pro for the Vista haters or Vista Ultimate
Monitor - Two Dell or Apple 30" LCDs (Three for ultimate surround gaming on 7680 x 1600 resolution)
Case - Silverstone TJ-09 or Cooler Master Stacker 830
All watercooled...and a plethora of miscellaneous crap.

AMD route would just be the same, except the motherboard would be a dual socket ASUS L1N64-SLI WS, with two FX-74s. The ram would be 4GB of DDR2-800 G. Skill HZs...heh..

Actually DDR2 is probably still faster than DDR3 in most benchmarks...but that's what I am thinking.

anandtech also said today low timing ddr2 is faster than ddr3, so according to what i've read your correct sora

What? I just read that article and they said

P35 supports either DDR2 or DDR3, and we found no real difference in current performance of DDR2 and DDR3 on the P35 platform. Both were equally faster than the same DDR2 on the P965 chipset.

AnandTech: DDR3 vs. DDR2

This was also with stock 1066 CPU speeds so I'm guessing that with the new 1333FSB CPU's overclocked it will have an advantage over DDR2 but thats a complete guess.

Anyways, my dream machine as of right now would be...
