once they have designed the architecture for DX10 GPUs, they don't loose money by manufacturing simple versions of the same core, so they might as well just do it.

well i think since its the next gen, this should be on par or maybe a tad better the the best 7300 card (is it GT?)

8600GTS - easily better than 7600gt
8600gt - just better than the 7600gt
8500gt - better than the 7600gs
8400gs - same as 7300gt/gs

I saw benchmark between 8500GT and 7600GS, and 7600GS performed better in the majority of benchmarks. I don't remember that website for the benchmark but you can google it.

8500gt - better than the 7600gs
8400gs - same as 7300gt/gs

right now its pointless but in a year or so DX9 cards will be obsolete and all games will be DX10. The budget and mainstream DX10 cards seem to be releasing a little too early to make an impact on the market.
