I recently purchased a 20" wide screen monitor. Would my performance be dramatically increased with a card of 512 MB rather than 256? If it is, is it because of the monitor size, or just because of the extra video RAM?

No there won't be, It depends on the resolution you're running at though, not the size of the monitor. Now granted, usually there is a higher resolution on a larger monitor, but not always. And, there will be more memory usage, but not enough to make a difference.

256 should be fine, although in games 512 should give you a better performance, but that's obvious ;)

Agreed with snake.

Like a 512mb would serve better on a resolution like 1600x1200 or higher, than a 256mb would.
