What to do with an old DVR

Well after my father moved he had his left over Directv DVR which is a Samsung SIR-S4090R featuring Tivo I guess. I opened it up to get an idea whats inside and noticed a 80gb WD drive, a intel chipset with a heatsink on it, and some samsung ram chips. My question is can i mod this to do anything useful like put an opterating system on the hard drive or maybe mod it to record video? Any possible ideas would be cool though I have a feeling ill just be ending up with a 80gb hard drive in the end. Lol
