I've got $6xx to spend and figured I could get a new cpu video card ram psu and mb (and vista maybe) for basic gaming no over clocking. But I know nothing about the amd's I've never had one or used a computer with one.

so is it better to get a intel or amd? do amd's require anything special?

I have always heard that Intel is better for gaming.

amd is better for gaming lol nope that was only true in the world of solo core as the Pentium 4 was awful as a cpu! but in the world of multi-core intel's core 2 duo atm is the best cpu but with the release of the AMD k10's that should put amd on top hence why intel are having massive price cuts on july 22nd conveniently the same day as amd release the first of ther new core I think Intel is scared that it will lose its title as ruler of dual core.

AMD were better for gaming up to a certain point, but now i would choose intel, im using the quad core currently.
