Hard drives use magnetic fields to write data. If you get magnets too close it can cause data corruption.


you need a VERY STRONG magnet like a laboratory degausser to harm data on a hard drive.

You have to remember that there is a strong magnet already inside the hard drive that swings the actuator arm back and forth
 
my friend has a lamp on his desk next to his monitor anytime he turns on the lamp half his monitor gets the swirly rainbow affect. the lamp on my desk as you turn it on and off you can just about here the speakers click with it
 
I don't have to worry anymore, because now my comp sits, on top of a metal desk.
