I apologize for sending you on a wild goose hunt. As I said I was on the XP machine.

Anyways to answer your more recent question and to resolve your problem.

Right click on your desktop and select Personalize.

Then navigate your cursor to Window Color and Appearance.

On the Window Color and Appearance screen towards the bottom click "Open classic appearance properties for more color options."

Under Color Scheme select Windows Aero. Then click apply then click OK to close that window.

ALT+TAB should give you a preview of the windows instead of an icon now.

You'll also be able to set window transparency now.

Hope that helps.

I found the Window Color and Appearance screen but didn't find the classic appearance properties near the bottom.

no i get a different window that i can only change the windows appearance to windows classic, windows standard, ect.

it just comes up when i click personalize and window color and appearance

ehich version of vista are you using? if its home basic it doesnt have aero

Then you options should be there. It should look like this and the Windows Aero should be your first option...
