I just bought a used computer today, and I was all excited.

It booted up Windows XP Pro, and gets to the boot up screen.

My monitor suddenly shuts off. It does that for everything, not just windows Xp!

I can't boot linux or anything because it does the same thing.

Why is this happening?

Update: Ok, I booted into Knoppix with the "Failsafe" parameter and that worked.

So what is then? It skipped bios detection and a bunch of other stuff.

What's the next step? Faulty video card?

I wouldnt say its faulty video card, but maybe messed up video card drivers.

Can you boot into safe mode with windows. If you can, remove the existing drivers and install the latest drivers for your card.

It's not just windows though.

It happens when you boot from a live linux cd.

Would that effect linux if the proper video drivers are not installed on windows?

Bloody thank you so much. It was the video card drivers. I just updated them and.. VOILA!

You don't know how happy I am. Thanks so much.
