Question about Dirext X

I've always been confused about Driext X. If you have lets say Direct X 9 installed in your windows and you install a game; it always installs a version of Driect x (even if it's older than your current). I have a 8800GTX video card. It's a direct x 10 card. Nothing uses dirext x 10 yet (atleast games). So I am running Direct X 9?????????
