So, saying a chap was to be building a new computer in the next few months, would it be best to get a socket F system with the cheapest CPU around and then upgrade when K10 comes out... OR just build a straight up C2D system and screw K10?

Thoughts?

Socket F is for servers. K10 will also be in AM2.

Unless you plan on getting dual CPU's (not dual cores), then I'd say go AM2.

The new CPU's will be for socket AM2+ (4GHZ HTT bus) but will work in regular AM2 boards (2GHZ HTT bus)

Though it may be worth waiting for an AM2+ board, for the faster HTT bus. I'm not sure how much it will affect performance though.

OK, cheers for that. I didn't realise we would be seeing K10 (4 core) om AM2.

the socket AM2+ processors that will be released are Agena and Kuma

Agena is the quad core (native quad core, not just two dual core chips glued to the same piece of silicon)

Kuma is the dual core, but will be released a bit later I think.

In socket F, they will release Barcelona, which is the quad core server chip.
