I don't know what happens when a CPU is not completely dead but if its dead, you'll get a black screen.

yeah computers don't take well top abuse. even though laptop hard drives are designed to take shock a good hit will take one out. you may be lucky enough to recover some data. but you will have to go out and buy a new drive for the laptop, reinstall and start all over.
