Spooler Service! ARGH

This happened about 2 months ago. I havent been able to print since.
I suddenly started getting the error of "Operation could not be completed, the printer spooler service is not running" I had no idea what this meant at the time so I proceeded to uninstall the printer and then attempt to add it again, bad idea now I cant even add a printer when I try to. Ive tried everything from the Prompt command "net start spooler" or whatever and the (SPC) services and changed it to manual and even automatic. Still no luck wit all these suggestions so I was wondering if someone out there has had the same problem and could lend some advice. Maybe its a virus? Any help would be appreciated.

Right click on my computer and then click manage. In the left pane go to SErvices and applications then click on services and scroll down to Print spooler and make sure it starts automatically and is started, if this doesnt fix it you can repair windows by putting in the xp cd then go to start>run type 'cmd' then run 'chkdsk /r /p' this will take about an hour, hour and a half. This will repair the xp installation and you should be able to print. P.S. sorry if in implied you were an idiot with my over simplification of some processes but i talk with idiot users everyday at work, lol.

One thing to add to the above post. When you double click the spooler service to open its properties, there is also a tab in that location for recovery. Make sure that restart the service is in the box. If these steps don't help you, and the repair doesn't help, I would think there may be some malware on your computer. And it never hurts to do a in depth scan anyway.

could be that you turned off a service that spooler requires to be able to run
I don't know all the serviced that have the spooler as a dependant.
You could try looking through the services that are "disabled" or "manual", maybe it's there.
But yeah, there are some malware that kill the spooler.
Post a hijackthis log, and we'll see.

If you are using a Lexmark, it will be a pain to fix it. It installs its own LexBCE service on wich it makes the windows print spooler dependant, even after un-installing the Lexmark software. It is a pain to get it working again. Use google and you may find some Lexmark specific fixes for print spooler problems. I had to edit the registry and reboot 100 times before I got it working again.

If it's not a Lexmark, try what other people suggested.
