Um, Most of the newer opterons aren't great overclockers. You'd need to get a very early stepping to have any chance at a great overclocker... And good luck trying to find one...

i ordered my 165 off newegg about 2 weeks ago, and i still received the CB5WE stepping, which is a great overclocker. There are only about two steppings, out of the 6 or 7, that arent monster overclockers. Even then, i have seen the worst steppings hit 2.5+ ghz on air. The only reason i keep mine at 2.3, is my crappy value ram that is restricting it, but once i get some new Gskill ram and my swiftech loop, 3 ghz here i come.

Most likely the Opteron, but it depends what type. You may have to be a tad more specific for any totally concrete answers.

indeed, it's a relative question. it depends on what you're comparing. for example the opteron 175 and X2 4400+ are pretty much exactly the same thing. as for the 170 vs the 3500+, the performance of each core should be roughly the same as the 3500+.
