Hi all, you've helped me out in a jam before so I thought I'd ask here again.

My internet connection has crashed and I cant seem to get it back up. I've called my ISP and they havent been able to help me. Here is my situation:

I have a cable modem with a router. I am using wires and ethernet, nothing is wireless. My gf's computer is able to go online most of the time whereas mine doesnt go online at all. When I load up a page is says 'server unable to connect" or "unable to load page". But the thing is, I can use AOL and it works fine, that is how I am able to post this now! AOL works fine, but I still cant get any updates online or play any online games. Also, IE and firefox do not work at all! So only AOL works (for some reason).

I thought my router was the problem so I went and got another router and no go, it doesnt do anything, so I really dont know what is the matter. I havent been messing with anything and the modem & router seems to be working properly. Even my ISP says that they are working and are showing up on their end. So what could it be? Is there anyway to tell what is wrong?

Have you ever tried using MSCONFIG to cut down on some of the stuff you have running in the background? Man, your comp is probably slow as all get out with all of that running.

I don't know all the stuff in the log, but it looks pretty thick. Have you tried running any antispyware apps to clean it up? Check out Warez' guide, or download Ad Aware, Spybot, and Windows Defender from MajorGeeks.com - Download Freeware and Shareware Computer Utilities.. They are all free and found under Anti-Spyware. Download each one, install one and update it, then scan. After it is finished, do the next. Make sure that you have Spybot immunize your system.

I have an antivirus program running and I do use adaware all the time. It never finds that much stuff though.

How do I use MSCONFIG? How do I cut down on stuff running?

As Pete said. Then, choose the Startup tab. Uncheck everything but what you NEED... AV, firewall, drivers. But only those! Clck Apply, then OK. Reboot. When it comes back (should boot faster), check the Don't sho this box on the pop-up, then OK. Go back to MSCONFIG's startup tab and make sure nothing rechecked itself. If it did, it is malware of some sort.

Ok, update. I ended up just taking out my hard drive and replacing it with a spare one. My old drive was so riddled with weird bugs and spyware that I just wanted to start fresh. I reloaded everything including windows.

My internet connection works on the modem, but still does not work with the router.

I bought another router ( a netgear brand router ) and that doesnt work either. I was using a linksys. So both routers dont work. Prior to this, the router worked fine and our connections worked fine. I didnt mess with anything and the router just crapped out on it's own.

The routers seem to be working, all the appropriate lights are on and receiving a signal but the display message on my screen say it's not getting a signal.

Well, you've definitely narrowed it down to the routers.

Can you access the routers' configuration page? It might be screwed.

Outside of that, use thier tech support. You paid for the product, and that price includes the support... even if it is just a script.
