Raid vs single HDD

if you have 2 80 gig hd's in raid 0 will the total hd size be 80 or 160.

Yea...since you never fully have what a drive's capacity says, the total is actually 149gb (74.5 each). That is how it shows in Windows, but the actual storage capacity is only 80gb (74.5gb). Keep in mind that with striping (RAID 0) each drive handles the same file, so they work in conjunction with each other for the same data.
