I decided to make the big plunge into buying a new PC after five/six years. This was mainly Armed Assault's fault because it ran horribly on my current system.

Current machine: Windows XP, GeForce 6800 GT 256mb, P4 2.8Ghz 533Mhz FSB, 2x512MB PC3200 RAM, 80GB Maxtor HDD, Gigabyte 8INXP Motherboard.

As a gamer who looks nice graphics, can you just confirm or deny that it is time to upgrade?

I don't trust myself to put a PC together, I'm no techy and I'd rather a professional organisation did it, so I went to Scan.co.uk.

Here it is at £1,374.46 ($ 2,699.57 US):

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe NF570 SLI, Socket AM2, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX

PSU: 580w Tagan TG580-U15 EasyCon SLi Silent Modular PSU

CASE: Coolermaster Centurion RC-534 Black Tower Case (£32.89)

CASE FAN: 120mm Akasa Amber Case Fan, 3 Pin, 2 Ball Bearing , Ultra Quiet and Long life

CPU: AMD AM2 Athlon 64 5000+ Windsor Core, Dual Core 2.6GHz, 2x 512KB Cache, Retail (£121.95)

CPU COOLER: Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro - S754/939/940 (£12.49)

MEMORY: 2Gb (2X1Gb) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-12 (£113.99)

VIDEO CARD: 640MB XFX 8800GTS XT PCI-E (x16), Mem 1700MHz, GPU 530MHz, 96 Streams, 2 x Dual Link DVI/HDTV (£259.88)

VIDEO CARD COOLER: Zalman VF700-CU Quiet "Copper" VGA Cooler + Memory Sinks for ATI/Nvidia*Please check the compatibility first* (£13.89)

SYSTEM DRIVE: 500 Gb Samsung HD501LJ Spinpoint T, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ (£76.99)

FLOPPY (it won't let me not choose it): 1.44Mb Sony Black Floppy Disk Drive OEM (£3.69)

DVD WRITER: NEC AD-7173A-0B Labelflash Black 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer inc 12x RAM Oem (£17.70)

SOUND CARD: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music Sound Card OEM (£42.54)

TV CARD: Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-T Freeview receiver PCI (909) (£24.79)

OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32Bit (£99.99)

SPEAKER: Creative Inspire Black T3100 2.1 Speaker System (£26.69)

CASE FANS+: 120mm Sharkoon 2000 "Golf Ball" Quiet Case Fan (£5.99)

SOUND PROOFING: Akasa PaxMate II Acoustic Sound Proofing Kit for Case - Midi to Full Tower (£7.29)

Am I being conned? Is this a good system (value)? Any unnecessary stuff? Any idea how long it will last?

Will the 8800 be old in the next month as is so often the case with these Graphics Cards?

Thanks.

seems like a little bit much for that system.
I would get Core 2 Duo instead of the AMD, Seagate HDD, the logitech x530 and the extremegamer sound card

Edit: go ahead and get Vista, just make sure you get either the retail with both versions, or the 64 bit version

I've heard the complaints but surely they're going to fix the issues?

yes... in a few year :p

anyways you don't need sound proofing, tv card unless your actually want them. It will last a few years Im guessing...depends on if you take care of it. Also your video card wont be old but it wont be the best, not even the best atm.

I would go for a core 2 duo and a seagate for the hdd.
