greetings wise ones...
I have just ordered my first shipment of parts for my
6300 based machine.
The 6300 and MOBO I got on a deal from Intel...
I know the processor is a good one to overclock
(every other thread seems to be raving about the 6300),
BUT what I wanna know is: what about the MOBO?
It's a DG965WH by intel.
From what I have been told, the "Northbridge" need to be
kept very cool if you OC (like possibly add a small fan to it.
My case will have 3-80mm and 1- 120 mm fan, so I dono if this is necessary).
I was hoping to go up to around 2.8, and maybe use a Zalman heatsink/fan.
This is mostly a Warcraft machine, so I know I don't need to OC
it for that...mostly, I wanna see if I can do it.
But I also would like to play FEAR and BF2142 and maybe Crysis
when it come out.
Is overclocking for those worth it?
what kind of % increase in performance are we looking at here?
If I HAD to, I could probably find another MOBO to start out with.
Are there any good alternatives?
Is the Zalman really necessary? How hard is it to deal with the old
thermal paste when you want to remove the stock sink and fan,
and add an aftermarket?
just trying to cut thru the crap and to the chase.
Sales guys will tell you anything it seems...
thanks in advance!! =D
Mac
PS: I might add, the number of fans does NOT include PSU and
the fan for the CPU. Also, I'd be running 2GB of Corsair XMS 800
RAM, and a 550w PSU. Dunno if any of that info would matter to
yall, but I posted nonetheless.
