question about amd cpu

I want to upgrade my cpu without changing my mobo so I will be thinking about the last of the 939 era...

I saw in the specs that this type of processor is a "server" processor?
Does this mean I will not be able to use this cpu for desktop purposes? I would like to get a dual core socket 939 cpu that will support the 8800gts. Hopefully this will work. COME ON TECHIES I NEED YOUR HELP! Thanks and hope to hear feedback soon.

server processor doesn't mean anything except for voltage changes and binning quality. (and in this particular case, retail vs OEM)
they can be used for the same purposes as regular processors, in fact, sometimes people prefer them as they can overclock easier.
unless you really need the 200 mhz, you're just as well off saving $100+ and getting the 4600+ with a decent aftermarket cooler (like the blue orb II, or zalman 7700) and some Arctic Silver 5 when it gets back in stock. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103541

I would say, "If it gets back in stock." Unfortunately, skt939s are becoming rarer and rarer.

I would say go for the Opteron, as you may not be able to pick up the 4600...

if you're going with the opty get a 165. it overclocks the best out of the opterons, and it's also cheap.
if you're going with x2 get a 3800. it will overclock higher than the 4600. i routinely see them clocked as high or higher than my 4200.
