Bad sectors scan and HD manufacture date.

Hey all, I have two questions:

1. Does scanning for bad sectors on a HD in XP have a detrimental effect on the HD?

2. Also, anyone knows a way to see the HD manufacture date?

I dont know what kind of rives they are but the date should be on the drive itself. Western Digital has a program that will check for bad sectors as well. No it doesn hurt the HD.
