Hey, new here, first post, but not a newbie to technology.

I'm getting either of these:

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Barton 400FSB
256MB Kingston 3200+ RAM
CHAINTECH GeForce FX5900XT 128MB-VRAM ($175)
Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
GIGABYTE "GA-7VT600 1394" KT600 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU

Total AFTER Tax: $592.00

OR:

CASE
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton 333FSB (I believe)
512MB Kingston 3200+ RAM
Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
SOYO KT-600 mobo
Celestia Radeon 9600XT 256MB-VRAM ($162)

Total AFTER Tax: $607.00

Which is better and would give me more bang for my buck? I was thinking the 2800+, all I really want to do is run UT2004 at 10x7/12x6 will all the bells and whistles turned on with around 50-80 FPS, and I want to play FarCry without any lag at medium settings. (High would be preferred)

#1 is caseless, number 2 is not.

I believe the second would be better because you get more RAM, a better Video Card, and only a slightly less good processor.

The problem is, my ceiling is about $610.00 USD, so I think I'm gonna go with the second one.

*EDITED*

def the second one 256 is not enough in todays world tbh and though games are gonna need as much ram as u can give em. i like the gpu. how much is it? cos ive heard that if u can stretch to a 9800pro u can flast it to a 9800xt, very sweet :D

Athlon XP 3000+'s and 2800+'s are both 333MHZ FSB

I'd say go for the second but instead of 1x512MB stick of RAM, go with 2x256MB to work in Dual Channel - is faster and less expensive

and instead of the Hitachi HDD go with a Seagate as they are prolly about the best of quality

I'm only buying off of Newegg, and it was the cheapest I could find, I switched out the 9800 with the awesome 9600XT, the 9800 was $217, and the XT is 175, comes with ALL of the works (Like the DVI/S-Video/Composite connectors, for an AWESOME price.

Are oyu sure that the mobo supports dual channel? Because it wasn't written anywhere.
