Help! Is there a new virus out there

I have AVG and did a virus scan and removed all the viruses. But now on Symantec, there is a new way to scan for viruses online. There is someting on my computer that will not let me access
http://www.symantec.com/index.htm or
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ I was able to down load a demo version of Nortons Anit Virus because it did not have symantec in it's address, but once i tried to do a live update it would not work because it gose to the symantec site. Has this happened to anyone else.

I dont use Symantec so I dont know, dont worry others that have will answer soon.
If it isnt a virus then I would think to try the following:

- Disable.configure your firewall
- Try another browser/configure your browser
- Increase/decrease your internet security

I Have XP Pro

I was able to access http://www.symantec.co.nz/ and do a manaully download the update and did a virus scan in safe mode. It came up with 19 ADWARE threaths which I had to delete myself through regedit and then deleted them from my windows explorer. after all that I still not able to access www.symantec.com still.
