Do cold cathode ray lights have to be connected to the psu? I want to have some outside of the case but don't know if that would be possible if they have to be hooked up to the power supply.

Cold cathode's are 12v so if you want 2 have them sum where outside of the case you need 2 get sum sort of 12v converter if you plan on pluging into the wall since the power from the wall is 115v ac and they are only 12v dc.

You could always splash it in oil and light it on fire, should give you a good glow without any power.

I don't think cathodes would look very good outside a case since they're designed to make their surroundings look good, and hence they go inside a case. Plus if you really wanted to go outside then you could drill holes in a case, right?
