greetings wise ones...

I have just ordered my first shipment of parts for my
6300 based machine.
The 6300 and MOBO I got on a deal from Intel...
I know the processor is a good one to overclock
(every other thread seems to be raving about the 6300),
BUT what I wanna know is: what about the MOBO?

It's a DG965WH by intel.
From what I have been told, the "Northbridge" need to be
kept very cool if you OC (like possibly add a small fan to it.
My case will have 3-80mm and 1- 120 mm fan, so I dono if this is necessary).
I was hoping to go up to around 2.8, and maybe use a Zalman heatsink/fan.
This is mostly a Warcraft machine, so I know I don't need to OC
it for that...mostly, I wanna see if I can do it.
But I also would like to play FEAR and BF2142 and maybe Crysis
when it come out.
Is overclocking for those worth it?
what kind of % increase in performance are we looking at here?
If I HAD to, I could probably find another MOBO to start out with.
Are there any good alternatives?
Is the Zalman really necessary? How hard is it to deal with the old
thermal paste when you want to remove the stock sink and fan,
and add an aftermarket?
just trying to cut thru the crap and to the chase.
Sales guys will tell you anything it seems...

thanks in advance!! =D

PS: I might add, the number of fans does NOT include PSU and
the fan for the CPU. Also, I'd be running 2GB of Corsair XMS 800
RAM, and a 550w PSU. Dunno if any of that info would matter to
yall, but I posted nonetheless. :D

what matters most of all in a gaming system is the graphics card. overclocking your processor will show negligible performance improvements in games (aside from if the cpu is choking performance, which isn't very often) when compared to the effect of having a decent graphics card/overclocking the card. in summary: overclock if you are a performance freak and have to have every bit of power possible in your system or if you use it for something where the processor makes a lot of difference. just don't expect leaps and bounds in gaming performance.

or do it just cos it's fun!
don't you need to o.c. to about 2500mhz (if you're not that high stock..)or so to keep your cpu from bottlenecking your card? i think i read somewhere that my 7900gs needs that much...?
nitestick take a look at my post about psu please...

Naga,

I've not heard that about my GPU needing the CPU to run that
hot. That's something I hadn't thought of...
stock, the 6300 runs at 1.86, although I have heard of many
folks easily running it up over 3.00 -- there's even a thread around
here somewhere talking about that. Max PC Magazine OC'd their
6300 to 3.00 on a stock heatsink, but then they had a fan-cooled
northbridge.
I'm not sure I wanna go THAT
high b/c my northbridge doesn't have a fan, only a heatsink.
Then again, I've got 3- 80mms and a 120mm fan in my case.
I guess I could add another 80... :D
If I had my druthers, I think I'd take it up to 2.5ish if what your
saying is true. Not sure what the 8800GS OC needs to run
optimally, but I'm game to find out.

anyway...if someone can verify that I need a little more juice on
the CPU side to keep my 8800GSOC from bottlenecking I would
be a very greatful noob.

cheers

PS: I did get the case, fans, PSU, and some of the other stuff in the mail, might be posting some building pix soon. :)

according to anandtech u can go a min of 2.5 ghz on e6300 with a stock intel cooler, maybe u can push it further, look in cpu/chipset section on www.anandtech.com

2.5 is enough....

I think. Would that open up the bottleneck (if there is one) on the
8800GSOC?

who came up with this bottleneck nonsense!! anyways far from it, intel core 2 duos are the best in cpu's now, y would the best be an bottleneck
