USB HD Crashes computer

Whenever i plug in a USB HD or flashdrive it crashes my PC. Is there an obvious reason for this or am i being 'special'?

my PC has the following:
PSU - Tagan TG430-U22 430W
CPU - P4 3.3GHz
2GB RAM - 4 x KVR333X64C25/512
Graphics Card - radeon 9600Pro 128MB DDR
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-8IK1100 (Rev. 1.0) socket 478

Windows XP sp2

I have a 4 port USB hub from a PCI slot and 4 slots in the back of my motherboard and it affects all of them.
